Laying down on the job (5 posts)

Enzo, my 15 month old Blue Weim has this not so amusing tendency to lay down outside. Usually we’ve already been outside once to let him do his business then come back inside. He usually stands by the door acting like he needs to go out. I take him out and then he lays down and refuses to get up. I’ve basically ended up having to heft him up on his feet. When I get near him he gets a little defensive/ornery. I have tried treats, and enticing him. I am unsure if this is a adolescent activity, some way of showing dominance, an isolated case or anything.

Any advice or insight would be much appreciated.

    Thank you,
    Sean

Hm that is a bit strange. Once you get him up on his feet, then what? Do you think he thnks it’s a game? What happens if you just ignore him?

Once I get him up he generally follows along. Sometimes he lays back down. I do think some of it is a game. If I sit down with him and wait it out he just seems content to lay around and watch the goings ons. He seems really stubborn too. He isn’t really enticed by treats either which leads me to believe he is just being a little rascal.

I would probably just not let him out if his behavior is undesirable, as long as of course you can tell when he needs to potty versus just wanting to go out to hang out. One of mine loves to go and lay out and sun bathe so I don’t find wanting to lay around that unusual per se; however I would probably want to address him being ornery about doing what you want.

We have changed our habits a bit and it somewhat mirrors what you’ve suggested here. We’ve decided to let Enzo out and sun bathe as long as he doesn’t act up. The past couple of days it has worked out well.
