Holiday Toy Guide

Weims can be tough on their toys, and our dogs are no exception. We have had different dogs who have different tastes in toys: some prefer to cart a sacred toy around for weeks, others can find endless amusement (er, destruction?) in a simple tennis ball. Some can de-stuff and destroy the toughest of toys, and yet others won’t play unless you play with them. Our panel of toy testers has tried them all!

These our top picks for the holidays:

Orbee Ball. Need we say more? If your dog loves to play ball, this is a major upgrade from her old stinky tennis ball!
GoDog toys with ChewGuard: Roadkill, Mr. Monkey with “pullable” arms, Toughskin rhino, and the stretchy moose. All these guys take a beating and keep on kicking. The monkey stood up to 4 puppies and 2 big dogs playing tug with it!
Zogoflex Hurley, Huck, and Tux are great toys that our dogs love to chase, roll, and bounce. The Bumi (a thinner, “S” shaped tug toy) went south thanks to my sister’s pit mix. They do have a good guarantee for a one-time replacement or refund, so always worth looking into!
Premier Twist N Treat.A nice attempt on a classic idea. Dogs couldn’t destroy it supervised, and really enjoyed swatting it around the house. An outdoor toy for sure.
Premier Busy Buddy Tug-a-Jug Treat Dispensing Dog Toy.Not recommended. Our guys figured out how to unscrew this and get to their kibble in about five minutes. Yep.
Kong toys just can’t be beat. Make sure to pick the right toy for your dog, though! Most weims need the black one, for vigorous chewers. Ours have made quick work of most of the Wubba, Squeezz, plush, and airdog toys that Kong makes. But no beating the original!

Katie’s Bumpers
are probably one of our favorite and most durable toys. And the dogs love them, too. Tug, toss, gnaw, these things are super durable and really cool.
Fleece tugs aren’t for your dog to play with unsupervised! It takes a Weim about nine seconds to gnaw through one and create a really nice bowel obstruction (not tested). But as far as tugs go and as a tool for building drive? Good stuff!
Nylabone. Our dogs are big time chewers. They really like the Pro Action Chew (maybe ‘cuz it tastes like bacon?!), the Big Knot Chew, the Turkey Leg, and any of the DuraChews that are textured. We start them out as puppies with puppy nylabones, and it seems to create a lifetime obsession with these things. I don’t get it —- must be a Weim thing. Of course they love the edible ones as well. Maybe they’ll get one in their stocking if they’re good.
High quality rolled rawhide. A lot of people feel that rawhide is dangerous. But even the WDJ agrees that quality rolled rawhide is a good thing. Look at the rawhide from the side. You should see that it is a complete roll made from one thick sheet, made in the US and with no chemicals. See the photos and captions in the article even if you don’t read it!

    Cuz toys: http://www.jwpet.com/dog/cuzdetails.html
-They will chew off the feet/honrns/etc, but the ball and squeaker will hold strong! We have a few of them around, and only one of them has a broken squeaker.

I thought about the Cuz toys, but since my guys immediately (and surgically) remove the feet and they can go down their gullet in a jiffy, I vetoed the Cuz. Macy has killed/removed the squeaker in one, as well. A pretty good one, though!

Yep my Holly managed to work out how to squeeze and pop the lid off the Premier Bottle treat despenser after a couple of goes…that was after she’d ripped the rope stopper out first attempt!!! and the twist and treat just got ripped apart! One of the best toys i’ve bought is Kong Wobbler…..fill with treats then has to be knocked around (remember wee-balls..same principle!)to get them out…..keeps her amused for ages..just remember to screw it up tight!! :0)

I feel like a horrible weimar-mamma because my girls only have ONE thing on this list. They’ve been so good this year I feel like I need to buy them a load of “Happy New Year” presents.

Thank you for vetting these out so I don’t have to!
