Weim Color

So you’ve got your new Weim pup’s registration papers in front of you, and you see the boxes to check for color — “gray,” “silver gray” or “blue.” You rule out blue immediately, and now you are wondering the difference is between gray and silver gray. And somehow in the far reaches of your mind you remember hearing about mouse gray and deer gray. Talk about confusing!

Weimaraner Ways says, “Weimaraner colors range from very light to very dark gray. The Germans identify these shades: deer-gray (very light gray), silver-gray (medium gray), and mouse-gray (very dark gray).

OK. The problem with this is that deer-gray and mouse-gray are described relative to medium gray. And do any two people really ever agree what is “medium”?

Here’s a small quiz. What colors are these dogs?

How about this one?

Are you with me people? Can we just call them blue or gray? (OK, fine, “grey” for those that live outside the U.S.; I can live with that!)

Well, I have one Silver Gray and one that is lighter than Gray, but it’s not as light as the Silver Gray. Now that being said they are both registered as Silver Gray. But the one I have that is Blue… There is not doubt.

This may not be a popular answer but how about TAN!! I have tan pants that match the “gray” Weimaraner and I have gray pants that match my “blue” Weimaraner. Who came up with these color names anyway? Did they not have a color wheel handy?

I call them taupe! LOL… June is a light warm gray. Greige is another term I sometimes use! (Gray-beige)

I think it is the base colour that determines the colour name. The one on the left is a diluted black and the two on the right are diluted browns. So the one on the left is the only blue and blues all have black noses. I am skepitical that this introduction is from a mutation however it is possible. Mutation or deliberate mixed breeding, or always present in small numbers, that’s my definition of a blue.
