Since I don’t live in Michigan to get their local PBS, all I can say is, ya gotta love the internet. Michigan Out of Doors recently aired a piece on NAVHDA (North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association), a training and testing organization for versatile hunting dogs, which include Weimaraners.
There are only four Weimaraner NAVHDA Versatile Champions, and in the video we have the pleasure of seeing one work. His name is Tanner (VC Skeeter’s Tannerbaum MH SDX RDX) and is shown working with owner Jerry Gertiser in the field. Trooper (Silvershot’s Lil Tom Boy SDX NAVHDA NA1 UT1) demonstrates water work with owner Judy Balog who also owned and trained the very first Weimaraner Versatile Champion, Gunnar (VC DC AFC Magnum Gunnar Silvershot MH SDX RDX VX).
I asked Judy what makes a great Weimaraner for hunting and NAVHDA and this is what she said:
“A good NAVHDA Weimaraner is a dog that loves to search in the water and marsh as much as he does on land. He must be confident, bold and at the same time be a cooperative team player. A good NAVHDA Weimaraner should also be as good as any other well bred versatile hunting dog in that he should naturally point well, retrieve well, have a superior nose and a great desire to hunt.”
Want to SEE what she means? The go to the Michigan Out of Doors website to see the video. The NAVHDA portion starts at 12:55.

Well, I would like to see Judy showing them how it is done but gonna have to find a faster connection! The video is streaming like a tortoise doing the thorazine shuffle!
If you’re going to watch the video, you can skip ahead to the 12:58 mark to the NAVHDA section. I recommend pressing pause and letting the video load. Get yourself an ice cream while you’re waiting, it will take about 5 minutes to load… even on high speed connection.
Ok, just finished watching… I WANNA GO HUNTING!!!!!
P.S. Great job Judy!
