At Trax Weimaraners puppy testing is serious business as they endeavor to match puppies to their new families and roles, but now, with formal testing complete, it’s time to introduce you to Rab.
In baby puppyhood, Rab was observed to just melt in to the crowd in his litter, never overly feisty or vocal, he was observed regularly to stalk and point his littermates, following up with a big pounce onto them. He took readily to his recall lessons and accepted toenail trimming and other handling with a minimum of fuss. He constantly packed toys around and loved to play tug of war. On the formal testing he showed a balance of curiosity about his environment and interest in the tester with good confidence. His prey drive was very high, he showed a strong natural retrieve, good learning speed and a good reaction to pressure. He was comfortable in the water and keen to hunt and point birds and his conformation was above average, possibly even good enough to warrant a future career in the show ring.
While Rab’s test results showed a very good match for his future roles as a companion and hunting partner, some of the essential characteristics for a potential field and show competitor simply cannot be tested for at such a young age. Will Rab develop an insatiable passion for birds? How far will he be willing to run and hunt in search of them? Will he stand up to the rigors of field training? Will he grow big enough for the show ring? Will his adult teeth come in with a perfect bite? Only time will tell but already the suspense in growing.
A ride has been arranged for Rab to his new home and now, the baton is now passed to the Ferguson’s who will continue to guide Rab’s development and training. Check in to see what happens!
What’s in a Name?
Often, a name isn’t found for a puppy until after it arrives into its new family. However, the Ferguson family was way ahead here, having picked out the name Rab for their puppy since their summer vacation the previous year. It comes from the book Johnny Tremain. Rab Spilsbee is not the main character of the book, but he had a character that the whole Ferguson family came to love and respect. Rab was a strong leader, faithful friend, and he had a servant’s heart. The Ferguson’s loved him and agreed that Rab would make a great name for their dog. Who could disagree with that?
But that’s not all – registered dogs need more than an everyday call name, they also need an official moniker. For Rab the start of his official name will be the two kennels that came together to produce his litter WestWeim and Trax. After some brainstorming, the registered name WestWeim Trax Rabble Rouser was settled on because it incorporated the call name Rab and also embodied the spirit of Rab’s namesake.

Definately not enough puppy pictures…
This is torture! I lost my heart dog in mid-May, but won’t be ready for a puppy for about four years. Rab’s breeders sound like the sort I want to work with when I’m ready. I know what I want in a pup, and a breeder that tests and prepares a litter so conscientiously is a treasure!
