Alright, so I’ve already admitted that my dogs are horrible counter-surfers.
While most of the time, the worst that can happen when your dog gets into something they shouldn’t might be diarrhea or gas, there are times when counter-surfing and otherwise stealing stuff can be downright dangerous.
We’ll talk about crates some other time, but what do you do if your Weim gets into something like cooked chicken bones which can splinter and damage your dog’s insides?
What if they ate some – uh, let’s say – steel wool? (Don’t ask; suffice to say it’s happened to me.)
Since I was certain of what my Weim ate, I knew that I wanted it to pass through, not bring it back up causing damage on the way up. Please note: Some things that are accidentally ingested will require that you induce vomiting! Please call Animal Poison Control ((888) 426-4435; 24/7) or your emergency veterinarian for instructions.
Anything sharp that’s been ingested needs to be “wrapped” with something in the digestive tract while it passes through, and here are some things you can give your Weim to do just that:
- Bread. Any kind. It will help “cushion” the items in the digestive tract.
- Cotton balls soaked in anything tasty. You need to use the cotton kind, not synthetic. The fibers will wrap around the sharp edges. Don’t give your dog too many as it could potentially cause a blockage instead.
- Canned asparagus. Again, the fibers will wrap around the sharp edges. The downside is that feeding it to your dog might not be easy…
- What I did. I got some chicken broth and poured in some Metamucil. It made a “big glob” (about 1 cup) of gelatenous “stuff” which my Weim gobbled right down. Warning: Only do this if your Weim has constant access to your yard! A little later, what went in came right out — and the steel wool was wrapped in the glob. Hooray!
It strikes me as sorta funny as to what makes a Weim owner say “Hooray,” but it truly is worrisome and extremely dangerous if your Weim gets into things he shouldn’t. And, unfortunately most of them eat ANYthing!
Please be aware that any time your Weim ingests something he shouldn’t, a vet visit is in order, and my advice doesn’t consititute veterinary advice!
What kind of stuff has your Weim eaten?

Oye!! Glad the steel wool found it’s way to the exit well. Scary!! The most notable thing mine has “eaten” (thankfully interrupted before it went down the hatch) was a cellular phone (that cost me $450!!) I’d say I’ve gotten off very lucky with eating things so far, in the way of actual digestion. He’s counter surfed half of a cake…. he could only reach half of it with four-on-the-floor
I found it amusing and wondered at his self restraint, I was the only one….. LOL
Lily ate an entire quilt. An old dog named Dick (weim) ate half of a truck window. We fed him an entire loaf of bread soaked in mineral oil. He lived several more years. Topaz and Amber never ate anything but food. Was there something wrong with them?
whoopi grabbed a paper envelope of powdered milk off the counter and was eating the powder and the wrapping while it was on the floor. the other dogs joined in eating the powder.
whoopi also grabbed a lemon off the table and started to eat that. the bummer was that this was a lemon right off my friend’s homegrown lemon tree.
last night, the new pup genie, jumped up and starting eating my salad – all i saw missing was an olive.
not really dangerous but i’d rather not have a bgd.
My dog ate a pair of pantyhose once. That gave me a big scare, but she turned out Okay. She also ate a fishing lure that I had in my jewelry box that my father carved by hand when he was a little boy. She ate everything but the hook. She’s ten years old now and doesn’t get into anything any more (except for catfood and the garbage – occasionally). But in her youth, she was quite destructive and has given me quite a scare. Thanks for sharing the info
Never underestimate the IQ of a Weim. We are avid backpackers and were getting ready to hit the trail. We packed several unopened foil packets of freeze-dried food into a smell proof bear bag and put the bear bag into one of the packs. George has never been much of a counter surfer and after all, if a bear can’t smell it, it should be safe around a weim shouldn’t it? Short of it is, that our weim recognizes Mountain House food packaging, He watched us put it in the pack and helped himself to it by chewing through the pack once we had gone to bed. He had no need to sniff it out. Now our packs go into a locked pantry the night before we leave (Yes, George can open just about every door in the house too). The real question I would like answered however is how he can flood the floor when drinking out his water bowl but not spill a drop around the cup when he steals my morning cup of coffee.
