Are You Using All Three of These Training Techniques?

"Eric is her perfect little puppy" http://southparkstudios.com

While I’m not really a Cesar Millan fan, I do enjoy South Park. So when the Terrierman recently blogged about the South Park epsiode, “Tsst,” I was all over it.

Spoiled Weims and spoiled kids have a lot in common. Most notably, an over-indulged kid and an over-indulged Weim will overtake your life, leave you miserable and wondering what you saw in this breed in the first place.

So while I never thought that I’d get some great dog training advice from the likes of a sophomoric cartoon, a review of this episode by the Terrierman crystalizes the basics of how to deal with a Cartman-araner by using these three training techniques together:

  • Positive reinforcement
  • Negative reinforcement
  • And the oft forgotten IGNORE method

Most Weimaraners cannot stand being ignored. With their penchant for drama and manipulation, it’s hard not to get drawn in to their theatrics, but be forewarned, this is where most new Weim owners fall on their faces and act exactly like Cartman’s mom. And the consequences of acting like Cartman’s mom? Well, just watch the full episode here.

Did you see the South Park episode? What did you think? Please comment below.

Loved Eric Cartman on a dog leash! I agree that pretty much all problems a dog have are man made. They have to know who is boss/alpha and your training needs to be consistent.

Great analogy! Cartman-araner….or CARTARANER!!!! HAHA! :-)
Seriously, there is a direct correlation between spoiled children and dogs. I agree with the pros, pretty much all problems a dog have are man made.”

  3. Love this analogy! The first time Barry met Lou D’A, they shared puppy training stories. Lou asked “what’s the problem with puppies that don’t behave like they’re supposed to?” Barry immediately said “the owners.” I remember listening in and thinking… “you’re right. If puppies are out of control, it’s not the dog’s fault… it’s the humans that screwed ‘em up.” I don’t generally follow Cesar Millan, but I have seen some of his TV work, and I believe that’s his philosophy as well? Anyway… great analogy! [K]

OMG I am dying over here! If a Weim could talk, they’d sound just like Cartman!

I also agree the IGNORE method works great! I use it for both my Weims and nothing gets under their skin more….

My girl is too aloof to feel the effects of ignoring, but I did love that SP epi.
    fwiw, I am NOT a fan of MIllan’s, though….
